Livestream vs. hybrid: a comparison of costs

Livestream is a broad term which, depending on the definition, can be a “one-way show”, i.e. a broadcast of a program “in one direction” to many viewers without the viewers being able to see it. On the other hand, a hybrid broadcast is “incorrectly” called a livestream. The clearer the goal is set as to whether it should be a livestream or a hybrid broadcast, the more accurately livestream vs. hybrid costs can be correctly calculated right from the start.

With a livestream (1-way), the broadcast is transmitted to the viewers from a central location, e.g. from the trade fair stand or from an event room at the trade fair. However, there is no direct “visual communication” between the viewers and the livestream. This is generally more cost-effective, as the transmission is limited to one data stream and less bandwidth and technology is required. However, the costs can vary depending on the size of the audience, as a higher number of viewers requires greater bandwidth and capacity.

Chat platforms for hybrid livestream

A hybrid(2-way) livestream, on the other hand, offers the possibility of direct interaction between the viewers and the livestream, for example by showing the participants live, asking questions directly with sound and camera. This requires bidirectional communication and increased technical requirements, which can lead to higher costs. Costs can rise due to the implementation of interactive functions such as chat platforms, moderation systems and additional bandwidth for the return channels. Additional hardware such as monitors for viewer questions, loudspeakers or in-ear systems for the return channel are also required. Furthermore, a hybrid broadcast requires additional staff to screen the questions or moderate the chat.

High quality of the live stream from the trade fair

Depending on the transmission path, factors such as the quality and reliability of the transmission path, i.e. the internet connection, play a role. A stable internet connection, suitable streaming technology and, if necessary, the use of content delivery networks (CDNs) can increase costs. However, they are crucial to ensure a smooth transmission and high quality of the live stream.

It is therefore important to consider the specific requirements and objectives when planning a live stream. This is the only way to choose the right transmission channel and budget the associated costs appropriately.

It would be unprofessional to give an exact number here. If you are not sure whether a livestream or a hybrid broadcast is the right solution for you, please contact your livestream partner Stream1 on 089 41 41 453 10.
